Description from maker
My gender is unfinished, but this block speaks to my journey so far to discover who I really am, and what role gender plays in my life. I started with a basic fairly traditional block, and I then used different improvisation techniques to deconstruct and reconstruct the block. The rigid gender roles are full of straight lines, and the non-binary/transgender journey is filled with twists and turns. It starts with a small female child, a doll, waiting to be dressed up, being placed into these rigid boxes of gender roles and religious expectations, only to break it all down to find the real me. I feel like this is the closest thing that I’ve ever done to a self portrait.
Visual description
A composition with a central illustration of a girl in a pink dress surrounded by a patchwork of various patterned and solid fabrics. The fabrics are mostly shades of teal, as well as light pink, fuchsia, and white, arranged in an irregular pattern. Some of the fabric pieces have floral or swirl designs.
