Description from maker
Drunkards path block was chosen to represent the winding pathways one can go down in learning what identity and forms of expression mean to them, as well as the twists in turns in navigating how these things inevitably change your life while transitioning. I wanted to examine my own relationship to gendered colors while also remembering there are proposed genderless colors (namely yellow). I know pink doesn’t really equal “girl” and blue doesn’t really equal “boy”. I still have a fondness for my pink baby blanket made for me before I was born, so personally I don’t find these colors limiting or restricting. I see them here as a way to try to graph my own gender using these stereotypical colors. The embroidered stitches were made while thinking about both mending and embellishment. I think as trans people, ways of expressing ourselves through clothes and accessories (and other nonmedical ways of finding affirmation) can be thought of as a form of embellishment that at the same time mends and heals.
Visual description
The composition is divided into nine squares, each featuring a combination of cream, blue, pink, and yellow fabrics. The curved shapes in each square create a flowing, wave-like pattern across the block, with small embroidered crosses scattered throughout.
