I thought about how Florida is often cast aside, the butt of a joke, or discredited, but Florida is magic. It’s healing. The beauty of the various ecosystems is unlike anything I have experienced. Its brightness is often painful, and I can’t look away. Growing up queer in Florida is scary, and I think it took me a lot longer to realize my potential. But every queer person I’ve met in Florida is radiant, and I wanted to portray that feeling in this square. I was thinking about the future and the resilience of queer people in the south; they’re stunning and sharp. They’re connections and commitment to one another is unlike community anywhere else.
