Mika Daniel

Location

Anchorage, Alaska, USA

Creator demographics

25; Gender non-conforming, Nonbinary; White; Bisexual, Pansexual, Queer; I am neurodivergent, in recovery, and an SA survivor (all things that I think inform my gender experience)

Materials and construction

Quilt squares, cotton scraps, acrylic ribbon, denim, embroidery floss; All second-hand or gifted fabrics. Denim was hand-dyed, and the quilt square base was constructed by a family friend who taught me to sew; both were machine- and hand-sewn.

Description From maker

My creative process is rooted in play and exploration, so I meditated on what my gender journey has felt like as I explored the fabrics and collaged. The final product feels representative of the ways that my gender and sexuality are fluid and inextricably tied to the myriad of experiences I have had that shape my relationship to my body; I hadn’t made anything for fun in a long while, so I truly tried not to think, just play. There are pieces/scraps from this block that I have used in a bunch of different projects, and it feels nice to have put the final few scraps of old projects I couldn’t quite let go of into something for a larger project.
