Cotton shirting, printed cotton scrap; hand-dyed with indigo, cochineal, marigolds, and hemp leaves (homegrown). The shirt was rescued from the trash at a theatre I work for! The floral print came from the scrap pile at the Queer Quilting studio workshop I’ve been going to.; Machine sewn; It is a variation of “Delectable Mountains”

I realized that the first quilt I had received (a birthday gift made by my stepmom) was a variation of Delectable Mountains. It seemed like the perfect block to explore!; Earth and Sky (self given title) Yes! I read them over again at several stages of my thinking and creating. I was thinking a lot about colors, symbolism, and if I could find an established quilt block to utilize.; I almost abandoned it for a different idea, but then realized it was exactly what I dreamed of and added the saguaro borders to help make it the qualifying dimensions’ ; The process of self discovery. . . It’s never ending. Even after moving to Chicago and allowing myself to be more freely myself, I think there were still lurking reservations. I think I’ve always thought I had to be a “man”. . . And while I am proud to be a Gay Man, I am also proud to be Queer, I am proud of the overwhelmingly feminine power I possess. This is the first summer I allowed myself to use They pronouns, and it felt really good. In creating this, I imagined myself as the sleeping mountain, allowed the ecstatic joy of touching the boundless sky.
